SYNOPSIS
Zoé, une adolescente solitaire, s’évade d’un quotidien pesant en fréquentant une famille de gens du voyage qu’elle connaît depuis l’enfance. Lorsque son père décède brusquement, France, jeune gitane rebelle, lui fait prendre la route pour le veiller ensemble selon les traditions.
Zoe, a lonely teenager, escapes a painful family life by spending time with a community of travelers. When her father suddenly dies, France, a rebellious young gypsy, takes her on the road to organise a traditional wake.

Le film a été tourné en Charente, sur des lieux où la réalisatrice a passé son enfance. Elle y a rencontré une famille manouche sédentarisée, qui vit depuis 30 ans sur une parcelle de terrain qui appartenait à sa famille. Les deux familles sont amies de longue date, et c’est tout naturellement que Nina Bouchaud-Cheval a demandé à ses “frères et soeurs” gitans de participer au tournage. Hormis les comédien.nes de métier, les seconds rôles sont interprétés par ses proches issus de cette communauté. ”Enlightened” was shot in the Nouvelle Aquitaine region, France. Most of the film sets are locations where the filmmaker grew up, where she met a travelers family leaving a sedentary lifestyle. They have been settled down for 30 years on a parcel owned by her family. Both families have been long time friends, and naturally Nina Bouchaud-Cheval asked her “ brothers and sisters” gypsies to participate in the shoot. Apart from the professional actors, the second roles were performed by her close ones from the community.
